Oh, Roman and Iris. Oh boy.
I have to start by saying I didn't LOVE this one as much as I loved the first one. I think that's simply because of the ending. While it was cute, it just wasn't my favourite.
I loved the idea of Roman losing his memory (even though it hurt my SOUL) and them still being able to communicate through their typewriters. Roman being under Dacre's control was so interesting because no matter what he was forced to do, forced to write to, he ended up remembering who he was and who he loved anyway.
The whole tunnel system is so creative and magical. Being able to move between places so easily in the Underworld is so cool, even the use of riding on the controlled Wyvers is cool. Another part that I love about the magic system is how a key is used to open doors, and how whoever has a key can sense the magic. I just love it.
I think Dacre is a really interesting character. The fact that he can control so many people, including the wyverns is so cool. I love powerful, magical characters like that. Another character that I find to be interesting is Mr. Kitt. Mr. Kitt is a powerful person in Oath and pretends like he is undefeatable, yet he cowers under Dacre, but still tries to kill him. He becomes scared of what Dacre would do to Roman because of what he had done, but this is really the only time in the duology that we see him actually care about his son.
I love that Iris is the one who defeated Dacre with the help of Enva and Attie, but I didn't love how easily she seemed to do it. She simply chopped his head off, and it felt very anticlimactic.
Of course, Iris and Roman ended up together, and I did love the parallel at the end of Iris gardening and Roman throwing her a letter while sitting on the window ledge. It was so cute.
Overall, I did really enjoy the book.
4 stars.
